Enviro-Mark®NZ auditing & certification

Auditing is the only way to Enviro-Mark certification. We put a lot of effort into ensuring the programme has credibility and therefore, to feel confident you’ve met the requirements, we will need to make a thorough check.

The audit is an ‘onsite process’ – meaning that one of our independent auditors will visit you and your organisation and gather the necessary information to make their assessment.

Audit pricing is dependent on the time taken to complete the audit. Every audit is different however it is normal for an audit to last between 5 and 8 hours of time on site.

Here’s how it works:

1: Book an Audit

To book an audit you need to get in touch with us and we’ll find an agreeable time for the audit to take place. If our auditors are busy there can sometimes be a wait – however we will try our best to accommodate your preferred date and time.

To successfully book an audit you’ll have to complete and sign part of an Audit Booking Form. This will be sent to you after you have requested an audit.

2: The onsite audit

The independent auditor will then visit you at the pre-agreed place, date and time to conduct the audit within the pre-agreed scope and to the pre-agreed Enviro-Mark step.

If it’s a step above bronze you will be auited against the requirements of all preceding steps also (i.e. for a Gold audit you will also be audited against the requirements of Silver and Bronze).

The auditor will ask questions, watch activities and review documentation. It is recommended that you prepare for an audit by having key personnel available to answer questions and having copies of documentation available for review. Doing this will make the process easier and cheaper for you.

3: Audit report

After the audit (and within 10 working days) the auditor will issue you an audit report outlining their audit findings. These are split into ‘Observations” and ‘Corrective Action Requests (CARs)’.

The report provides you information as to how you could improve your EMS and will detail what has to be done to become Enviro-Mark certified. It is only sent to you and no one else.

4: Audit ‘close-out’

If you have been issued any CARs you will need to ‘close-out’ these CARs (i.e. rectify whatever issue they are describing), prior to being certified. You will get 6 weeks (42 days) to do this and during this time you will need to provide evidence of how you’ve rectified them to your auditor.

5: Certification

Once you have successfully closed-out your audit your auditor will automatically put you forward for certification.

If you meet all the requirements (no CARs in your report) at the time of the onsite audit you will automatically be put forward for certification.

We aim to send out certificates within a week of receiving a certification request form (completed on your behalf). The certificate will be framed unless you request otherwise. We can also issue an electronic copy of the certificate should you wish.

6: Re-certification

Enviro-Mark certificates have a maximum validity of 12 months from audit date (date used for certification). We will contact you towards the end of your certification period to arrange a re-certification audit so that you can continue being Enviro-Mark certified.

You may wish to use the audit opportunity to progress up a step, please discuss this at the time of booking an audit.
