How Enviro-Mark®NZ works
Using Enviro-Mark to implement a robust EMS is a simple way of improving your organisation’s environmental performance. The 5-step Enviro-Mark process tackles the implementation of each part of a credible EMS in a chronological fashion.
Together the 5 steps of Enviro-Mark are equivalent to the requirements of ISO 14001:2004, making the programme an ideal tool for you and your organisation to implement the requirements of this definitive international standard.

The 5 steps are as follows:
Bronze: Compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation
Silver: Production of an appropriate environmental policy based on the identification of environmental aspects and impacts
Gold: Implementation and monitoring of continuous–improvement targets and objectives
Platinum: Documentation of operational procedures and systems used to manage environmental aspects and impacts (e.g. work instructions, practices, training and communication, management review)
Diamond: Implementation of an internal management and audit programme to correct and drive continual improvement. [At Diamond level, a business is ready for an ISO14001 audit.]
For each of the 5 steps:
After joining the Enviro-Mark programme (you become a member) the approach you take to make progress is the same within each of the 5 steps:
-
You use the Enviro-Mark tools and other assistance to implement the requirements of Enviro-Mark. You make your own progress at your own pace – however, using the technical workshops, 0800 number, free seminars and drop-in sessions will speed things along and make life easier for you. The easy-to-use checklist helps you work out when you’ve met all the requirements of each step.
-
When you think you’re ready to be certified (you’ve been through the relevant checklists) get in touch and book an audit at a time convenient to you. Our independent and professional auditors will visit you at your site and conduct an audit. It’s a friendly experience where the auditor asks questions, views activities and looks through documentation. The auditor will then produce an audit report which is sent only to you and is designed to provide you with a concise account of where improvements need to be made.
-
If you have no corrective actions or you have successfully ‘closed-out’ the corrective actions, you are now eligible for Enviro-Mark certification. Certification for any step is valid for a maximum of 12 months. You can use your Enviro-Mark certification as independent verification for your efforts.
We refer to this approach as ASSIST – CHECK – CERTIFY:
